OVERVIEW

We are pleased to announce that the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum is hosting the ‘Exhibitions of Embassies: Introspective on Cultural Exchanges with the World.’ This exhibition series has been made possible through the dedicated collaboration of foreign embassies in Japan, who are deeply committed to disseminating their country’s culture as a window for cultural exchange.

This groundbreaking exhibition series marks the first attempt to illuminate lesser-known aspects of culture by showcasing treasured artworks and cultural assets loaned from embassies and ambassadorial residences of various countries. In addition to the exhibitions, we organize seminars and workshops led by embassy personnel. Moreover, we collaborate with our museum shop and restaurant, offering visitors immersive experiences that bring them closer to the vibrant cultures of these nations.

The Tokyo Fuji Art Museum continues to work hand-in-hand with countries worldwide to promote cultural exchange for peacebuilding in all its forms, providing opportunities for visitors to enjoy and appreciate outstanding cultures worldwide under its motto, ‘Fostering Global Citizens is Our Mandate.’

Message from Ambassador Marieta Arabadjieva regarding this exhibition

Esteemed visitors of Tokyo Fuji Art Museum,

It is my great honor to introduce Bulgarian art as part of the Exhibition series “Cultural Exchanges with the World”. I extend my deepest gratitude to Tokyo Fuji Art Museum for this valuable opportunity and generous support.

The exhibition features 29 paintings from the Bulgarian Embassy`s collection. We have selected for you masterpieces by contemporary Bulgarian artists from the end of 20th century to present days which skillfully showcase the people, nature and cultural traditions of Bulgaria.

Twenty six of the paintings used to belong to the Japanese businessman Mr. Hiroshi Harada who was a true friend of Bulgaria and a great patron of Bulgarian art. In 2023 his family donated 61 paintings from his vast private collection of nearly 300 pieces of Bulgarian art for which I am deeply grateful. Today we present these works publicly for the first time.

Bulgaria has rich cultural traditions that span several thousands of years. Many of you may know Bulgaria as the land of yoghurt and home of the oldest manufactured gold in the world. In this exhibition you will recognize other important Bulgarian symbols – the golden lion, the world-famous Bulgarian rose, the Bulgarian sumo wrestler Kotooshu, the Cyrillic alphabet which was created in Bulgaria in the 9th century.

Bulgaria`s culture is also strongly influenced by the Orthodox Christianity which is the official religion of Bulgaria. The displayed icons from the Embassy`s collection showcase the craftsmanship of the Bulgarian iconography schools. Each of the icons is handmade, unique and carries the spirit of harmony and enlightenment.

I hope that you will enjoy the Bulgarian art exhibition and bring home part of Bulgaria`s rich culture and spirit of enlightenment.
