SUMMARY
During the second Italian campaign, Napoleon crossed the Alps and triumphed in the battle in 1800. Among a number of the portraits of Napoleon that David painted, it is a painting that most strongly represents the visual image of Napoleon as a hero. The original of this painting is housed in the Musée du Château de Malmaison, and the larger versions are stored in some major palaces of Europe including Palace of Versailles, France; Charlottenburg Palace, Germany; and Belvedere Palace, Austria.
