SUMMARY
This piece depicts “The Carriage Competition”, a key scene from Aoi, the 9th volume of The Tale of Genji. It appears to be to be a copy of The Picture of The Carriage Competition which is thought to be by Tosa Mitsumochi (collection of Ninnaji). On the day of the Kamo (or Aoi) Festival, Ichijo-oji Street of Heian-kyo was crowded with people eager to see the purification ceremony for Onna Sannomiya (the third princess) to become a new Saiin (appointed to serve the deities of the Kamo-jinja Shrines). Genji was participating in the parade, and his mistress, Lady Rokujo was secretly viewing it. However, Genji’s wife, Lady Aoi came and had her servants aggressively move Lady Rokujo’s carriage out of her space. The right screen shows the parade of purification, while the left shows the quarrel between Lady Rokujo and Lady Aoi. Utilizing the full extent of the space, these screens portray the highlights of the scene, and at the same time convey the atmosphere of the festival to the modern viewer.
