Museum unveils stunning reproduction of Japanese sliding door panels

On April 12, 2026, the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum unveiled a high-resolution reproduction of “Sliding Doors with Design of Wind God and Thunder God,” a pair of fusuma sliding door panels by Kiitsu Suzuki, a 19th-century artist of the Rinpa school. While the original work by Suzuki Kiitsu renders all four panels front and back as a single work, the backlit display (photo) measures 9.5 meters across, for a total of eight panels placed side by side, positioned to enhance the work’s overall visual impact.

Due to the fragile nature of the two original works, which were deemed unfit for prolonged display, the replicated display used ceramic tiles that are resistant to discoloration. TFAM corroborated with Otsuka Ohmi Ceramics Co., Ltd. in order to faithfully recreate the work in great detail, from the silky texture of the Japanese washi paper of each panel and the delicate bleed of sumi ink, to the sheen of the carved wooden door pulls and bezels.
