On September 28, as part of the events commemorating “Exhibition of Embassies, Part II: Pathways to Cultural Exchange with the World” featuring works of art on loan from the Indonesian Embassy in Japan, the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum held a special performance by Balinese dancers featuring the traditional Baris Dance and the popular Kecak.
The event opened with welcoming words from His Excellency Heri Akhmadi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to Japan, and TFAM Managing Director Yoshiro Shimizu.
Following their greetings, the Balinese artists took to the stage that was backlit by a video of beautiful scenes of Indonesia, their Baris Dance performed with military-drill precision (which is why it is also known as the War Dance) and the Kecak performed in its enthralling synchronicity. During their performance, the Balinese shared stories regarding their dances and, in one instance, invited members of the audience onstage to take part in the dancing.
