Man Ray (1890-1976) was a talented multi-faceted artist who wore many hats as a painter, photographer, object artist, and filmmaker. As he had a cheerful personality, Man Ray formed friendships not only with painters and poets, but also with aristocrats in the Paris social circles of the time. This exhibition is divided into three sections: “1st section: New York and Ridgefield Period,” “2nd section: First Paris Period,” and “3rd section: Hollywood and Second Paris Period.” Proudly presenting 80 works of art by Man Ray (21 paintings, 35 photographs, 15 objects, 8 books, and 1 film) which are housed in the collection of Tokyo Fuji Art Museum, the exhibition traces his life. As he declared, “I am committed to my way, whether it turns out well or not. One of the satisfactions of a genius is his will-power and obstinacy,” Man Ray stuck to his way to the end, continuing to create outstanding works. Through his creative and entertaining works, this exhibition showcases the Man Ray’s witty artistic world which appears to overcome the dark “century of wars” in the twentieth century. We truly hope that it provides viewers with an opportunity to enjoy appreciating the masterpieces of a great artist, Man Ray.
