EXHIBITION OVERVIEW

Opening in commemoration of the centennial anniversary of the Japan-British Society, Tokyo Fuji Art Museum’s “Treasures of Japanese Art” was designated an official event at the Japan Festival 1991 held in conjunction with the Arts Division of the Edinburgh Festival, the world’s largest annual cultural festival. Drawing on TFAM’s sizeable collection of Japanese art, the exhibition featured some 120 select masterpieces from the 11th to the 19th century, including folding screens, ukiyoe woodblock prints, lacquer ware, and feudal arms and armor. It was the second showing in the United Kingdom following its opening at Taplow Court in 1989. The exhibition was made possible through the strong request of Japan-British Society president Sir Hugh Cortazzi.
