SUMMARY

The Orchid Pavilion Gathering was a historical event in which Wang Xizhi of the Eastern Jin dynasty gathered with 41 literati at the Orchid Pavilion in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, to hold the Shangsi or Spring Purification Festival (held at the waterside on the third day of the third month, known in Japan as Momo no Sekku, “Peach Festival”) and write poetry. Writers floating their cups along the water, writing poems before the cups pass are depicted in a lively fashion. In the pond in the center of the painting are the geese Wang Xizhi loved, and several people are painted indoors. It is thought that the person holding a brush is Wang Xizhi. The piece was painted by Goshun in his 30s, during the Settsu-Ikeda period. It is in the nanga (“Southern painting”) style of his teacher Buson.

ARTIST

Goshun (also known as Matsumura Gekkei)

1752-1811

Born in Sakaimachidori, Shijosagaru, Kyoto. His real name was Matsumura, given name Toyomasa, nickname Bunzo. Other names included Gekkei, Katen, Inpaku, and Sonseki. Pen names included Hyakushodo and Shodo. He was later given the name Sankaken by Yosa Buson. He studied under Buson, learning painting and haikai poetry. After the death of his teacher, he also studied under Maruyama Okyo, established a style which blended Buson’s poetic sentiment with Maruyama Okyo’s realism, and became the founder of the Shijo school. The Shijo school was named such because Goshun and many of his followers lived near Shijo. He was the older brother of Matsumura Keibun. He died at 60.
