SUMMARY

Jacques-Noël-Marie Frémy studied neoclassical-style painting with Jacques-Louis David. It is a painting that was copied after the Consecration of the Emperor Napoleon I and Coronation of the Empress Josephine, the milestone work of David, which is now housed in the Louvre. The coronation was held magnificently at the Notre Dame de Paris in the presence of Pope Pius VII. In general, a pope would crown an emperor, but in this coronation, Napoleon crowned himself. Then he pronounced his coronation oath: “I swear to maintain the integrity of the territory of the Republic; to respect and to cause to be respected the laws of the Concordat and the liberty of public worship; to respect and to cause to be respected the equality of rights, political and civil liberty . . .”
