SUMMARY
This work is an extract from the Jacques-Louis David’s masterpiece Consecration of the Emperor Napoleon I and Coronation of the Empress Josephine which depicts the Emperor Napoleon who is about to crown Josephine. This is considered to have been created in David’s workshop. The gorgeous red and white coronation robe decorated with ermines and golden embroideries of the Emperor Napoleon, who is wearing a classical golden laurel crown on his head, stands out against the darkened background and green carpet. Using an elaborately calculated technique, this iconic painting that captures the figure from the side and creates the movement toward the left highlights the emperor, full of majesty, in the dramatic stage setting.
