Based on public television network Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK)’s serialization of “Sanguozhi,” the Chinese literary classic translated in Japanese as the “Romance of the Three Kingdoms,” from 1982 to 1984, Tokyo Fuji Art Museum’s “Kihachiro Kawamoto’s Dolls from the TV Drama ‘Sanguozhi’” consisted of 100 dolls made by the renowned Japanese puppet designer and maker. Kawamoto (1925-2010) is not only recognized in Japan for the impressive characters adorned in ancient fabrics that he created for the NHK series, but also internationally for his animated films.
