EXHIBITION OVERVIEW

Flowers, familiar plants to us, have been used as a subject matter in a variety of artworks across countries and throughout the ages. Just like soothing and inspiring modern people, as well as giving them a joy of changing seasons, flowers fascinate a tremendous number of artists. Since ancient times, artists tried to capture the momentary brilliance of life in their works with their own style and manner. And also, giving special meanings to flowers, artists painted them as a way of conveying a moral message and representing a wish for happiness in life. In the 19th century, flowers and plants came to be traded as the exchanges between West and East developed. The expansion of trades of flowers led to the creation of new and enriched forms of aesthetic expression. Divided into three chapters: “1st chapter: Flowers in Western art,” “2nd chapter: Flowers in Eastern art,” and “3rd chapter: Flowers in Photographs,” the Flowers, Flowers and More Flowers: Exhibition of Flowers in Art from Tokyo Fuji Art Museum Collection presents a selection of the masterworks of art in its collection that feature flowers, including paintings, ukiyo-e prints, craftworks and photographs of all ages and cultures.
