Since it first opened its doors 33 years ago, the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum has acquired artworks as part of its permanent collection of Western paintings created over a period of four-centuries. These include pieces from the Italian Renaissance in the 16th century, the 17th-century Flemish school, the Rococo artists of France in the 18th century, 19th-century Neo-classicists and Romanticists, and the Impressionist school that flowered in the late-19th century as well as the innovative painters of the 20th century. A total of 275 works in oils, water colors, pastels and sketches—including 22 pieces shown to the public for the first time ever—by 202 artists will be displayed at both the Permanent Gallery in the Main Museum as well as the New Wing’s Exhibition Hall. The exhibition’s sheer panoply puts it among the largest exhibitions of Western paintings ever assembled in Japan. Also on special display will be the16th-century “Tavola Doria,” which our Museum donated to the Italian government in 2012. This exhibition has been designated as an official cultural event commemorating the centennial of the Hachioji municipal government.
