In 1913, more than 1,200 works by such renowned European artists and sculptors as Dominique Ingres, Eugene Delacroix and Marcel Duchamp, as well as leading Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, were displayed in the United States at the 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art. The exhibition, which was held at a U.S. Army armory in New York City, was organized by the Association of American Painters and Sculptors and widely celebrated as a milestone in the development American art. The Tokyo Fuji Art Museum retraces this landmark event through the exhibition, “Contemporary Art from a Century Ago,” which features oil paintings, pastels, woodblock prints and photographs by the European giants who contributed to the century-old “Armory Show.” In addition, photographic portraits of Henri Matisse (taken by the preeminent Robert Capa) and Pablo Picasso—part of our TFAM photography collection—are on display, as are works by such premier modern and pop artists as Man Ray, Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana.
