The Tokyo Fuji Art Museum’s collection of art and historical artifacts related to Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) and his reign—ranging from paintings, lithographs and sculptures to correspondence written in Napoleon’s hand, medals and historical documents—is presently comprised of 1,700 pieces. From this collection, TFAM has selected some 40 works for display in the special exhibition, “The Bold, Yet Frail Art Under Napoleon.” Taking root from the early-19th century, it was an era marked by significant advances in the cultural enrichment of France and in artistic techniques, particularly in decorative art, offering a broad array of subject matter that was as bold and lavish as it was frail and fleeting.
