OVERVIEW

A quest to identify the fount of aestheticism and spiritual essence of Japan, Tokyo Fuji Art Museum’s “The World of Yamato-e Paintings: Classical Beauty and the Japanese Soul” featured 100 works by artists from the Tosa, Sumiyoshi and Rin schools, as well as pieces by Kano school and ukiyoe painters. The exhibition's main presentation consists of five representative motifs—tales and poetry; snow, moon and flowers; spring and autumn; cherry blossoms; and autumn flowers—to provide a broad, multifaceted introduction of the Yamato-e tradition, creativity, design and expression, and changes in art techniques. In addition, the definition of Yamato-e was given a wider interpretation to include various paintings featuring Japanese motifs and art techniques.
