“The Masters of Japanese Art: The Soul of Yamato-e and Rinpa—The Masters of Modern Japanese Painting” exhibition organized by the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum explored different styles employed by master artists of modern Japanese art. These artists sought to revive the spirit of the traditional Yamato-e and the decorative art of the Rin(pa) School in order to infuse the classical aestheticism of Japanese art with new expressions. Their endeavors are seen through the works of the Meiji Period to the modern era, through which Japanese painters began to meld the traditional elements of the Yamato-e and Rin styles, which form the unchanging undercurrent of Japanese painting, with their own unique perspectives of the times and sense of style.
