Featuring 114 Western paintings by the foremost Japanese artists in the modern era, “A Special Exhibition in Commemoration of the First Anniversary of the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum: Two Centuries of Modern Japanese Oil Paintings” offered a panoramic view of their tireless quest in the search and creation of new painting styles that may be described as “Japanese Western painting.” The special exhibition divided the displayed works into six sections, from paintings from the latter Edo Period which were influenced by the West, to Impressionism and new art movements in the Taisho Period, as well as modern-day abstract paintings.
