Tokyo Fuji Art Museum’s “Famous Paintings of Mt. Fuji: From Sesshu to Modern Painters” exhibition charts the history of art depicting Japan’s most famous mountain. Some 130 works were exhibited, including traditional Japanese sumi ink paintings of the Muromachi Period, as well as ukiyoe woodblock prints from the Momoyama and Edo periods. A time-honored and favorite motif of Japanese artists of all ages, Mt. Fuji has come to symbolize the spirit of Japanese painters in their quest to capture the essential soul of their country.
