When Tokyo Fuji Art Museum’s “Masterpieces of Western Oil Paintings” opened in Seoul, South Korea, it was hailed for its scale and content: 74 of the finest Western paintings from the 16th to the 20th century in the TFAM collection was exhibited outside Japan for the first time. Until then, similar exhibitions merely featured one or two masterworks. The exhibition earned rave reviews from both the public and artistic community, drawing some 120,000 visitors to mark a historic step forward in cultural exchange between Korea and Japan. The Seoul venue of “Masterpieces of Western Oil Paintings” was made possible through various parties, including the Samsung Foundation of Culture.
