OVERVIEW

A special exhibition held to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan, “The Palace of Heaven on Earth: Works from the Palace Museum in Beijing” introduces some 200 paintings, craftwork, garments and jewelry, including 19 national treasures, from more than five centuries of dynastic rule in China, works which relate in particular to the women of the imperial court. A major highlight of the two-part exhibition is artworks pertaining to Empress Dowager CiXi and the children of the imperial palace, or the Forbidden City, located in the center of Beijing. The Palace Museum, which administers the Forbidden City today, is China’s largest museum, and its collection of some 1.8 million pieces make it the largest of its kind in the world. Since opening in Japan in July 2011, the exhibition drew more than 800,000 visitors in a ten-month period.
