Held in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of maritime routes to India, the special exhibition, “Splendors of Portugal: Five Centuries of Art, 1450-1950,” charted the country’s glorious history of art and aestheticism through the showing of some 100 paintings, sculptures, craftwork and historical records dating from the Age of Exploration to the modern era. The royal crown, swords, jeweled medallions and other prized works preserved by the Portuguese royal palace were also shown in Japan for the first time.
