OVERVIEW

While the National Museum of Cuba, with its extensive collection of ancient and modern works, ranks among the foremost museums in Latin America, they have rarely been shown outside of the country. The special exhibition, “Masterpieces of the 19th Century Spanish and Cuban Paintings: Collection of the National Museum of Cuba,” was made possible through the full cooperation of the Cuban government. Of the 62 paintings collected by magnates in the 19th century that premiered for the first time in Japan, 36 were Spanish, including works by Federico de Madrazo and father-son Romanticist painters Eugenio Lucas Velázquez and Eugenio Lucas Villamil. Another 26 works more by such master Cuban painters as Leopoldo Romañach and Armando Menocal.
