OVERVIEW

Held in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries that was established in 1954, 50 masterpieces from the Association collection were exhibited outside of China for the first time. Among the displayed pieces were landscapes, birds and flowers, and portraits painted by such contemporary masters in China as Ren Bonian, Wu Changshu, Qi Baishi, Fu Baoshi and other artists, as well as various cursive, semi-cursive, printed and simplified calligraphic scripts. Taken together, these works represented a unique blending of ancient and modern traditions, of Eastern and Western styles, that demonstrate the evolution of Chinese art and calligraphy in the 20th century.
