Early Edo Period (17th c.)/Color on gold-leaf paper, two-fold screen
156.5 x 171.0 cm
SUMMARY
On the lower left of the screen is a seal that reads “Inen”, a trademark that shows the piece was one produced in the atelier supervised by Tawaraya Sotatsu. On this two-fold screen, you can see more than a dozen varieties of flowers, including medake bamboo, ivy, sorghum, poppy, violet, primula, horsetail, hollyhock, autumn bellflower, rabbit-ear iris, pink, dandelion, cockscomb, pampas grass, and bush clover. Great consideration was made in the arrangement and combination of flowers so that you can see each flower in its entirety. The vibrant sense of vitality of the flowers at the peak of their season is pleasant, and the combination of the lustrous colors of the flowers and gold creates an elegant space characteristic of the Rimpa school.
