SUMMARY

The plank roads in the high mountains and deep valleys of Sichuan are splendidly depicted. In the rough lines of ink making up the rocky mountains, you can see the features of hokushu-ga (“Northern style painting”) that Buncho incorporated. Surrounding the rider and horse traveling the mountain path are trees colored in ultramarine, verdigris, and red ochre, adding warmth to the solid surface of the painting. The year it was painted marked Buncho’s 60th birthday, but there are no signs of decline to be found; rather, it suggests an abundance of vitality. Though it originates from a period highly criticized as one of overproduction, when he was nicknamed “Tori Buncho” (literally “bird Buncho”, referring to his chicken-scratch signature), this piece, made with all his might, dismisses that assessment.

ARTIST

Tani Buncho

1763-1840

Born in Edo. Studied at first under Kato Bunrei, and later Watanabe Gentai. With the philosophy of hasshu kengaku (studying all eight schools of Buddhist learning at once), he studied a wide variety of styles, including Chinese and Western painting as well as the Tosa, Rimpa, and Maruyama Shijo schools. He entered government service in 1788. He later became an attendant to senior councilor Matsudaira Sadanobu, and was involved in the production of Koyo Tansho Zukan (a collection of scenic spots) and Shuko Jisshu (Ten Kinds of Collected Antiquities). He also interacted with many writers such as Kimura Kenkado. He demonstrated a varied style which blended the characteristics of different schools of painting. He had many disciples including Watanabe Kazan, and created a new school of nanga painting in the Kanto region. He died at 78.
