Mid Edo Period (18th c.)/Lacquered wood
H 5.5 cm, W 23.0 cm, D 24.0 cm
SUMMARY
This writing box is square, covered with a lid with four round corners and a raised shape. The surface of the lid is lacquered in black and decorated with kirikane (cut metal) grapevines and gold lacquer leaves. The image of the grapevine moving diagonally downward from the upper left has been beautifully designed, without losing picturesque freedom. On the back of the lid is the moon, represented by lead flakes, along with a cluster of eulalia grass. Poetic sentiments of autumn dance against a background of scattered gold dust maki-e. This piece seems to condense the entire painting world of Musashino Plains into the handicraft of a writing box.
