SUMMARY
Against a backdrop of the curtain that reflects delicate light, a man sitting on a chair is staring with dignified and graceful eyes at the front. As if illustrating this man’s exquisite tastes, the golden mechanical clock is placed by the window and the sculpture of David treading on Goliath’s head is next to him. Depicted beyond the open window is the Castel Sant’Angelo, which was built as the mausoleum of the emperors during the ancient Roman Empire and served as the fortress for the popes. It represents the connection of this man with the Vatican, and it is presumed that he is a Venetian diplomat who was staying the city.

Tintoretto (Jacopo Robusti)
1518-1594
Born in Venice, Tintoretto first studied with Titian, the Venetian-school painter. During his staying in Rome (1545-1546), he was strongly attracted and significantly influenced by the sculptures and drawings of human body created by Michelangelo. Tintoretto attempted to sublimate the buxom and beautiful colors of Titian together with the drawing ability of Michelangelo that ingeniously captures masses, and his art was developed into the scenes of artificial rays of light and the representations of dramatic movements. Tintoretto significantly influenced his contemporary painters, especially El Greco of Spain.
