SUMMARY

Lucas Cranach the Elder was one of the great masters of Danube school along with Albrecht Altdorfer. In 1505, the artist was invited to Wittenberg by Frederick III, elector of Saxony, as court painter and painted portraits and altarpieces. He served to paint for three generations of Saxon electors. Depicted here is a portrait of young, full of energy John Frederick the Magnanimous (reigned 1532-1547), the third elector of Saxony whom Cranach served and pledged his loyalty to. Through the artist’s keen observations including his superb realistic technique and profound psychological portrayal, this portrait fully reflects the model’s unique masculine appearance and bold character. This half-length portrait, facing to the right, is considered to have originally been the left part of a diptych.
