SUMMARY
The bowl of the helmet is made from five sheets of thin iron, topped with a papier-mache shachihoko (a mythical creature with the head of a tiger and body of a carp) using thickly applied washi. The entire helmet has been thickly painted with lacquer and hardened, with the mouth and nostrils lacquered in vermilion. A gilt bronze veneer was attached for the eyes, and the shikoro (a neck guard of articulated plates) were made from iron-plated moriage-zane (thickly lacquered scales) lacquered in vermilion, over which was painted black lacquer. A Hineno-style five-plated helmet laced in purple, it features round single-plated fukigaeshi (wing-like projections at the sides), lacquered in black with an ornamental silver lining. Its papier-mache techniques and lacquer work are excellent make this a well-balanced harikake helmet.
