SUMMARY

The left screen depicts wild chrysanthemum varieties such as white chrysanthemums alongside starshine, Chinese bellflowers, yellow patrina, bush clover, silvergrass, heavenly bamboo and spearflower – all of which are plants that bloom in autumn and winter. The right screen shows dandelions, poppies, Japanese thistles, violets, azaleas, hydrangeas, horsetails and brackens – in other words, plants of spring and summer. Each plant is positioned upon the gold base which is used in full with no depiction the ground, a technique that was perfected by the Rinpa school. The plants and flowers, their details carefully depicted, retain a great sense of life.

ARTIST

Attributed to Tawaraya Sosetsu

Date of birth/death unknown

A painter from the first half of the Edo era. Some believe that Tawaraya Sosetsu was a son or a student of Tawaraya Sotatsu, based on his claim to the Tawaraya name. Although he used the same Inen seal as Sotatsu, this theory remains unconfirmed. Regardless, Sosetsu is thought to have been one of the most important painters in Sotatsu’s studio. He became a Hokkyo (the third highest rank for Buddhist priests) by 1642, and later served the Kaga-Maeda family. His major works include Akikusazu (“Autumn Plants”), Ryukozu (“Dragon and Tiger”), and Folding screens of Gunkakuzu (“Flock of Cranes”) among others.
