SUMMARY

The Later Three Years’ War, which arose from conflict amongst the blood relatives of the Kiyohara clan in Ou and lasted five years beginning in 1083, played a role in raising the military fame of Minamoto no Yoshiie, the governor of Mutsu Province who fought the powerful Kiyohara family. The war also became the basis for the prosperity of the Northern Fujiwara. Picture Scrolls of the Later Three Years’ War is a masterpiece among senki emaki (illustrated scrolls of war). It was originally passed down as a treasure of the Ikeda clan in Harima Province, and is now owned by the Tokyo National Museum. This piece is a copy of the original. The scene of this especially gruesome battle pulls the viewer in.

ARTIST

Gen Ki

1747-1797

Born in Kyoto. His real family name was Komai, given name Ki. His nickname was Yukinosuke. Studied under Maruyama Okyo and mastered the secrets of his technique. He was particularly skilled at painting beautiful Chinese women, which were coupled with the beautiful Japanese women painted by his fellow pupil Yamaguchi Soken. His use of color was especially excellent, and he and Nagasawa Rosetsu were called “the two sages of the Okyo school”. After Okyo’s death, he assisted Okyo’s eldest son Ozui, protecting and growing the Maruyama school. He distinguished himself in the graceful picturesqueness inherited directly from Okyo’s style of painting. He was counted as one of the Okyo school’s “ten sages”, along with Soken, Rosetsu, Mori Tetsuzan, and Gessen. He died at 51.
