400 Years of Western Paintings – Masterpieces from Tokyo Fuji Art Museum –
Exhibition period:Saturday April 12~Sunday June 8, 2025
Nagoya City Art Museum (Aichi, Japan)
SUMMARY
Millet, who had moved from Paris to Barbizon in the spring of 1849, exhibited at the 1867 Salon a work titled The Goose Girl, which is of the same title as this painting. The same year, he wrote of this Salon-exhibited work in a letter to his friend Sensier: “I want to make the screams of my geese ring through the air. Ah! life, life! the life of the whole!” This work The Goose Girl, previously owned by his friend Sensier, seems to have been painted at the same time and the same place as the above-mentioned Salon-exhibited work, and is a central piece of a series of his paintings on the theme of a “goose girl.” Millet applied oil paints so thinly that the underdrawing lines are almost visible, exquisitely representing the atmosphere of the summer sunlit waterfront with the watercolor-like effect. This subject of a goose girl is different in taste from Millet’s other paintings of religious nature that depict adult labors, and this painting purely represents an idyllic world. It is the masterpiece of his later years that beautifully depicts peasant life in harmony with natural environment.
