Saotome Ienari was of the third generation of the Saotome school of armory that flourished during the end of the Muromachi era and into the Momoyama era. He lived in Joushu (now Ibaraki Prefecture) and was especially skilled in the production of suji-kabuto helmets. Rather unusually for that school, he left many large pieces.
