Robert Capa 1913年10月22日 - 1954年5月25日
ハンガリー生まれの写真家。 本名は、アンドレ・フリードマン（André Friedmann, ＊フランス語読み）。 20世紀を代表する戦場カメラマン、報道写真家として、スペイン内戦、日中戦争、第二次世界大戦（ヨーロッパ戦線）、第一次中東戦争、第一次インドシナ戦争の5つの戦争を取材した。 デビュー作は、カメラを隠して会場に入り込んで盗撮したデンマークの首都コペンハーゲンで講演するレフ・トロツキーの写真である。 1933年9月よりパリに移り、翌年、ユダヤ系ポーランド人の女性写真家ゲルダ・タロー（本名はゲルダ・ポホリレ、Gerta Pohorylle）と出会い、公私に渡るパートナーとなる。 スペイン内戦中の共和国派民兵が銃弾に打たれて倒れる瞬間を捉えたとされる《共和国派民兵の死「崩れ落ちる兵士」》（1936年9月）が、アメリカのグラフ誌『LIFE』1937年7月12日号に掲載されたことによりその名は一躍有名になった。 1946年にアメリカの市民権を得て、イングリッド・バーグマンやピカソなど著名人を撮影した。 1947年には国際写真家集団マグナム（MAGNUM）を結成。 1954年4月に写真雑誌『カメラ毎日』の創刊記念で来日するも、5月1日のメーデーの取材を最後に、バンコクからサイゴンへとインドシナ半島へ渡る。そして5月25日、ベトナム北部のタイビンにて地雷に抵触し、死亡。
