In this painting you can find the elements favored by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, such as “red color,” “beautiful clothes,” “young woman’s skin,” and “calmness.” The yellow hat, one of the elements that often appears in Renoir's painting, also plays a very important supporting part.
The early 1890s, when this work is thought to have been painted, was a time when Renoir was shifting from his “Ingresque” period (or dry period) to “pearly period,” a new style that he was establishing. He was taking a step forward that would eventually lead to the mature style of his later years. The realistic style with firm, precise lines of his dry period in the 1880s already disappeared from the surfaces of his works, and as can be seen in this work, the contours are more fluid, the clothes are tinged with tremulous tones, and both figures and backgrounds seem to blend in to the light. Here, we see a typical fruit-like “Renoir’s woman” with a soft, gentle gaze. The figure and background interact with each other, as if they are merging in the light. The perspective disappears, and the space is painted almost flat. The colors are not restricted to unique colors of objects. Representing the beauty of colors becomes the painter’s theme. This painting appeals to viewers with the radiance of the colors, not with the forms of objects.
As Jean Clay analyzed in her book Impressionism, these characteristics of Renoir's works can be said as the joy of a completely new visual experience that Impressionists acquired by deconstructing traditional painting techniques. This work has a history of having been sold to the public from the largest art dealers, such as the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune and the Galerie Durand-Ruel, who dealt with Renoir’s paintings.
